. Published in 1969, this 101-page report comes complete with both original geologic maps, one of which is a
vivid, full color geologic map
of the area. It shows the geology in great detail, and comes with several amazing cross sections at the bottom that really bring the geology to life and show how complicated it is.
This area overlaps into
Yellowstone National Park
, and a little over a third of the map area falls within the park. Rocks in the area
range
from ancient Archean metamorphic and igneous rocks, through several Paleozoic formations, up to comparatively young volcanics related to the Yellowstone eruptions. The structure is quite complex, with folding and faulting modifying the formations in many varied ways. the result is a map of great interest, with vivid colors and fascinating cross sections.
The other map is a shaded relief that helps show how rugged the landscape is. It’s pretty cool in its own right.
The text does a great job of describing the rock units and their structure, and there is a full section devoted to explaining the geologic history of the area.
Hebgen Lake
is partly on the map toward the west. This lake was the site of an earthquake that caused a giant landslide that wiped out a campground near the lake in 1959, killing many people, and forming a new lake as well. This would be of interest to anyone looking to visit the Yellowstone area and wanting more information on the geology of the area. Any hikers, backpackers, or would-be geologists
would
also find this of value.
